When Should I have my Air Ducts Cleaned?
Dirti Ducts • May 14, 2019
We know it’s tough knowing when to have your air ducts cleaned. After all, there is no magic window to view the inside of your air ducts. NCDCA compliant, it’s our job to help our residential and commercial clients know when to clean their HVAC air ducts.
According to the EPA, Americans on average spent about 90% of their time indoors. Often the concentrations of particular pollutants are 2 to 5 times higher indoors compared to the outside. With that, our indoor air quality in our homes and businesses is more critical than ever.
Factors to Consider
Although we can’t see inside air ducts without an inspection, we know that we too can leave an impact on our indoor air. From illness to pets or visible mold, and home or business renovations if any of the following fit your particular situation, you should consider having your air ducts inspected.
The US Department of Energy recommends you check and or clean your blower motor and air conditioning coils once a year.
At Dirti Ducts, we suggest cleaning your entire HVAC system air handler, evaporator coil, condenser coil, air ducts, and exhaust ducts and unit once every three to five years depending on how many inhabitants there are in the home including pets.
Our four-legged family members, although loved dearly inherently leave behind pet hair and dander. From one pet to many you may want to consider cleaning your air ducts.
Are you or someone in your family suffering from an unexplained allergy-related illness? If you’ve taken every precaution to decontaminate your home and the allergy-related disease continues, you may want to consider having your air ducts cleaned.
- Mold & Mold Spores
Mold thrives in dark and damp environments. If you see evidence of mold growth inside your ductwork you need to have your air ducts cleaned. Mold or mold spores may cause allergic reactions such as a runny nose, scratchy eyes, sneezing or even a skin rash.
- Smoking Indoors
If you allow smoking in your home or business, you should consider cleaning your HVAC air ducts regularly. Nicotine residue can become airborne a second time as it’s left behind in your air ducts, furniture, walls, and carpeting.
- Did you move into a new home?
Congratulations if you said yes!
Keep in mind as you settle in that unless the previous homeowner provided you with proof that they had the air ducts professionally cleaned within the last three years, you may want to consider having them inspected.
We all tend to leave a few small things behind when we move, with one of those things being what we unwittingly left in the air ducts over the years. From pet hair to sawdust from a past remodel to dust mites, chemicals and fungi, the fact is you don’t know what was left behind lurking inside your ductwork.
- Water Contamination or Damage
In and of itself water is one of the most potent forces in the world. It can change landscapes and smooth rocks. When it penetrates your home or HVAC system, the repercussions can lead to structural deterioration and harmful mold.
If your home or business has suffered contamination or damage due to water, you should have your air ducts inspected for possible mold buildup that may require decontamination.
